WYDの十字架とイコンがオーストラリアに上陸したのは、WYDへの始まりの合図です。

世界最大の若者のイベントの象徴　-　WYDの十字架と聖母マリアのイコン
シドニーでの歓迎式典を目前にした、今日　オーストラリアに到着しました。

全長3.8mの十字架とそれに寄り添うイコン(聖母マリアと赤子のイエス)は、ジョン・ハワード首相とニュー・ サウス・ウェールズ州のモリス・イエンマ州知事とともに、何百人もの若者と聖職者によって、ニュージーランドからの旅路の帰着を歓迎されます。

十字架とイコンは、オーストラリア中の400のコミュニティを回るために、12ヶ月の巡礼のスタート地点である福者　マロリー・キャップの聖地である北シドニーへと旅立ちます。

その後、午後1330～始まる、ダーリング・ハーバーのタンバロン公園での歓迎式典で、数千人若者に出迎えられます。

そこで、ガイ・セバスチャンとパウリーニが作ったWYD2008の公式テーマソング　「Receive the Power」、初披露します。 （ガイ・セバスチャンとゲイリー・ピンが作詞作曲。）

「WYDの十字架は、20年以上もの間、若者達の肩に担がれ、世界中を旅行しました。そして、人類に対する希望、平和とキリストの愛のメッセージを述べ伝えてきました。」と大司教　フィリップ・ウィルソン(オーストラリアの司教協議会会長)は言いました。

「これらの、人々を感動させるシンボルは、この国の至る所に旅をします。そして、その途中、多くのオーストラリアの若者達に人生に触れていきます。」と彼はいいます。

大司教ウィルソン(アデレード教区の大司教でもあります。)と、すべてのオーストラリアの司教区からの青年代表団は、ニュージーランドの青年と司教団、大司教　ジョン・デュー大司教、ニュージーランドの代表派遣使節団団長から十字架とイコンを受け取ります。

Arrival of the Cross and Icon signal countdown to Australia's World Youth Day

Sunday July 1 2007: The symbols of the world's largest youth event - the World Youth Day Cross and Icon of Our Lady - will touch down in Australia today ahead of a day of welcome celebrations in Sydney.

The 3.8 metre high Cross and accompanying Icon - a portrait of Mary, the Mother of Christ and the Child Jesus - will be officially welcomed from New Zealand by Prime Minister John Howard, NSW Premier Morris Iemma, and hundreds of Australian youth, clergy and laity.

The Cross and Icon will then travel to the shrine of Blessed Mary MacKillop in North Sydney where their 12-month pilgrimage to more than 400 Australian communities will formally start.

They will then be taken to Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour where thousands are expected to welcome them in a public celebration from 1.30pm.

Guy Sebastian and Paulini will premiere the official World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) anthem, Receive the Power, a song Guy wrote with Gary Pinto for next year's event.

"The World Youth Day Cross has travelled on the shoulders of young people all over the world for more than 20 years, bringing the message of hope, peace and Christ's love for humanity," said Archbishop Philip Wilson, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.

"These inspiring symbols will travel throughout this country, touching the lives of many young Australians on their way," he said.

Archbishop Wilson, who is also Archbishop of Adelaide, and a delegation of youth from every Australian diocese will receive the Cross and Icon from the President of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops, Archbishop John Dew, and a delegation of New Zealand Catholic youth.

WYD08 Coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher OP said the arrival of the Cross and Icon heralds the countdown to World Youth Day in Australia next July.

"It is therefore a special time for Australians to be custodians of these simple, yet powerful symbols," Bishop Fisher said.

"Like an Olympic torch, only more sacred and meaningful, these symbols will herald the coming of World Youth Day to Australia next year. In the meantime they will be carried upon the shoulders of young Australians and touch the hearts of us all."

Around 500,000 people are expected to take part when Sydney hosts the XXIII World Youth Day from 15-20 July 2008. The event will also mark the first visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

Guy Sebastian and Paulini premiere World Youth Day anthem

1 July 2007: Guy Sebastian and Paulini's latest collaboration Receive the Power is the official anthem for the world's largest youth event - World Youth Day - which will be staged in Sydney on the 15-20 July 2008.

Receive the Power is an inspirational song that is being officially released today at a free outdoor event in Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour. Thousands are expected to attend this event which also celebrates the arrival of the World Youth Day Cross and Icon, considered to be the 'Olympic Torch' of World Youth Day.

Guy wrote the song with Gary Pinto, and performs with Paulini on the English language version. An international version with verses in Italian, Spanish and French has been recorded and will be distributed worldwide from next week.

Guy has woven the lyrics around the theme for the 23rd World Youth Day chosen by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI: "You will receive the power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses." (Acts 1:8).

The week of World Youth Day events in Sydney is expected to attract half a million people from around the globe in a youthful and Catholic celebration which will include the first visit to Australia by His Holiness.

"Receive the Power is a wonderful work, a foretaste of that day next year when by the power of the Holy Spirit divisions between peoples will be set aside and "every nation, every tribe" will come together for the World Youth Day," said WYD08 Coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher.

The song was produced in collaboration with SONY BMG Music Entertainment Pty Limited.

120,000 planning to attend World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney Registrations going strong with just over one year to go!

Tuesday 26 June 2007: Almost 2000 groups representing more than 120,000 people have registered to attend the world's largest youth event in Sydney next year.

Although still more than a year away, overseas group registrations for World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) have been coming in strongly, suggesting the target of 125,000 international pilgrims may be exceeded, organisers say.

"Almost 100,000 international pilgrims are expected at this point in time, and nearly 23,000 Australians," Chief Operating Officer Danny Casey said.

"We expect the numbers of Australian pilgrims to grow much stronger as we get closer to the event," Mr Casey said.

WYD08 will be held from 15-20 July 2008, and will feature the first visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

The top 12 source countries, with current expected pilgrim numbers, are:

Going strong - over 80,000 pilgrims on their way to World Youth Day

Monday 14 May 2007: Excitement is building for World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) with groups representing more than 80,000 pilgrims currently registered to attend the event.

An Australian milestone has also been reached with the first 20,000 Aussie pilgrims now expected, based on the 240 groups who have registered.

Australian registrations come a close second to the United States, which leads the charge with nearly 27,000 pilgrims from over 400 groups.

France, Germany and Venezuela round out the top five to date.

"We are delighted with the current numbers," said Danny Casey, Chief Operating Officer, WYD08.

"Although individual registrations and payments will not be accepted until July, these figures show momentum is building internationally and domestically," Mr Casey said.

"With indications of 80,000 pilgrims in just 10 weeks, we are confident of reaching our estimate of 200,000 formal registrations."

World Youth Day, the largest youth event in the world, was first held in Rome in 1986.

Sydney will host the XXIII World Youth Day from 15-20 July next year.

背景
シンガー・ソングライターのガイ・セバスチャンは2003年にオーストラリア最初の傑出したアイドルとして登場しました。
それ以来、彼はトップ3に入る、五曲のアルバムを発表し、20曲のシングルは一位を含む、20位以内に入っています。
彼は、13歳の頃から教会のために曲を書きはじめ、多作のソングライターでもあります。

Guy Sebastian to write and sing World Youth Day 2008 Song

13 May 2007 - The theme song for the XXIII World Youth Day in 2008 (WYD08) has been chosen.

Written by Guy Sebastian, "Receive the Power" will become the anthem for Australia's hosting of the world's largest youth event in Sydney next year.

"We wanted a song that was stirring and uplifting," WYD08 Coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher OP said.

"Above all, it had to engage young people and capture the theme of World Youth Day 2008 - namely, that you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses."

Bishop Fisher said when WYD08 organisers heard "Receive the Power", they knew they'd found their anthem.

"To put it simply, 'Receive the Power' hit the mark on every level.

"Clearly, Guy knew we needed a song that would inspire the young people of the world to take up Christ's challenge to go to the ends of the Earth and be His witnesses; for many people in the northern hemisphere, Australia is the ends of the Earth!"

Bishop Fisher said "Receive the Power" was selected after a two stage process.

A song competition held last year drew more than 120 entries - many of them outstanding compositions in their own right - but the judging panel felt none quite delivered all the elements in a single package.

Several composers were then invited to submit songs for consideration, from which "Receive the Power" emerged as the favoured WYD08 theme.

A 'demo' recording was delivered to the Pontifical Council for the Laity - the Vatican body overseeing World Youth Day preparations - which granted its approval and support when Bishop Fisher visited in April.

"The WYD08 theme had to measure up thematically and be anthemic - yet be easily sung by people of all language backgrounds," Bishop Fisher said.

"We are confident 'Receive the Power' will rally young Catholics of all backgrounds to World Youth Day in 2008."

The song will be recorded and produced this month for release around the middle of the year.

BACKGROUND

Singer/songwriter Guy Sebastian came to prominence as the winner of the first Australian Idol in 2003. Since then, he has released three top five albums and seven top 20 singles, including three number ones.

Guy started writing songs for his church since he was 13 years of age and is a prolific songwriter.

In 2005, Guy was appointed Ambassador for World Vision and visited Uganda to shoot a documentary highlighting the issues of poverty and civil war and their impact on the population.

Guy collaborated with Australian singer/songwriter Gary Pinto on the song.

Gary fronted the multi-platinum selling R&B band CDB in the 1990s before embarking on a successful solo career.

He has written songs for several Australian artists including Guy Sebastian, Anthony Callea, Christine Anu, Jimmy Barnes, Jade Mcrae, and American soul singer Taylor Dayne.

Australian & NZ Catholics to help disadvantaged pilgrims attend World Youth Day 2008

Monday, 7 May 2007: Catholic communities in Australia and New Zealand will help young people from disadvantaged communities in our region attend World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08) in Sydney under a new scheme of partnership and cooperation.

The scheme, known as the Pilgrim Partnership and Support Program (PPSP), was launched at the Plenary Meeting of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC) in Sydney today.

ACBC president Archbishop Philip Wilson said the PPSP will help ensure the biggest ever representation of pilgrims from our region at a World Youth Day.

Under the PPSP, Catholic parishes, schools and movements in Australia and New Zealand will link up with a poorer parish or school in our region to help their pilgrims attend World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney (WYD08).

"Host partners are encouraged to seek out and support young Catholics from indigenous communities in Australia as well as from neighbouring nations such as East Timor, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea,' Archbishop Wilson said.

"Host partners might raise funds to cover travel and registration fees or provide accommodation, warm clothing or other assistance.

"This is a wonderful two-way experience for the parishes and the young participants.

"The Australian spirit and willingness to help those in need will shine through, creating a deeper engagement between people in our region and connecting young people through their faith in a practical, meaningful way."

WYD08 coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher OP said this was the first time the Oceania region has hosted a World Youth Day, making it important to maximise participation from our neighbours.

Up to 500,000 people are expected to take part in World Youth Day XXIII from 15-20 July 2008 - a quarter of whom are expected to come from overseas.

WYD08 will also mark the first visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

World Youth Day Sydney welcomes Qantas as Official Airline Partner

1 May 2007: World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) today announced Qantas would be its official global and domestic airline partner.

The internationally renowned carrier is the first major corporate partner to join WYD08 - an event expected to attract the largest international visitor and media contingent to Sydney since the 2000 Olympic Games.

WYD08 - the largest youth event in the world - will draw an estimated 125,000 overseas visitors to Sydney and mark the first visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in July 2008.

"We are very pleased Qantas has agreed to support World Youth Day 2008," said the Chairman of the WYD08 Local Organising Committee and Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell.

"Qantas is not only an iconic company in Australia - it is also very highly regarded and recognised worldwide.

"Qantas will help convey to international pilgrims the Australian flavour we will bring to this event, as we invite the world to celebrate with us in July 2008."

Cardinal Pell said Qantas would play a major role in bringing many of the overseas pilgrims to Australia as well as significant numbers from interstate and regional NSW to Sydney.

International pilgrims are also expected to visit other parts of Australia prior to the WYD08 week (15-20 July 2008), giving them a greater Australian experience.

In March, the Federal Government announced all registered pilgrims would receive a minimum three-month visa - free of Government charges - enabling them to see more of Australia while here for World Youth Day.

Cardinal Pell said the Qantas commitment was a key pillar partnership alongside the already committed substantial State and Federal Government support.

"Just as importantly, we will be tapping into Qantas' global expertise to help transport pilgrims as smoothly as possible and to deliver a world class celebration for a global audience," he said.

The Chief Executive of Qantas, Geoff Dixon, said Qantas was honoured to be associated with the visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

"Events of the magnitude of World Youth Day provide an opportunity to showcase the best Australia has to offer - a responsibility Qantas takes seriously.

"We look forward to working with the World Youth Day organisers to promote Australia as one of the world's most beautiful destinations, as well as using our extensive event travel experience to ensure the smoothest possible arrangements for the many thousands of visitors flying in for the event," Mr Dixon said.

The Qantas partnership with World Youth Day will play a key role in successfully staging this historic occasion.

World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world and will involve an anticipated 500,000 participants.

1000+ groups register for World Youth Day 2008 in first 50 days

28 April 2007: International interest in World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08) in Sydney looks very promising with more than 1000 pilgrim groups registering in the first 50 days.

Organisers say they are delighted with the response, which indicates more than 65,000 pilgrims are already planning to attend the event from 15-20 July next year.

"Eventually, we're expecting around 200,000 people to formally register and up to 500,000 to attend at least one event during the week," said WYD08 Chief Operating Officer Danny Casey.

"So it's very encouraging to see more than 1000 groups representing 65,000 pilgrims already registering to attend at this early stage."

Group registrations opened on 2 March - 500 days before the start of World Youth Day 2008 - to give WYD08 organisers a guide to expected demand for accommodation, catering and transport.

"Individual registrations will open in July; this is when pilgrims will have to provide individual details and can start making payments for their packages," Mr Casey said.

Key indicators to emerge in the first seven weeks of group registrations include:

* The United States is the biggest source of groups and pilgrims at this stage (375 and more than 23,000 respectively)
* Australia is next with 146 groups, representing 15,484 pilgrims
* The next biggest source countries are Canada (42 groups), Germany (34) and the Philippines (25) - all previous WYD host nations
* Almost 50,000 pilgrims (77%) have nominated English as their preferred language, with 6,506 nominating Spanish (10%) and 2601 preferring German (4%)

World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world and will attract an anticipated 500,000 pilgrims to Sydney for six days of religious and cultural activities. It is a Catholic event, open to people of all faiths.

WYD08 will also mark the first visit by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Australia.
